ABOUT RADISH STIR FRY

Radish stir fry is an Indian style stir fry recipe. It is one of the quickest and easiest stir fry recipe mildly spiced with basic Indian spice ingredients.

Radish stir fry is super-easy, can be put together in a jiffy and is ready in 15 minutes. It is a really tasty dish with a bit of the vegetable’s natural flavour and crunch. The radish will be soft yet not too much and will hold their shape.

Serve radish stir fry with steamed rice and dal or any Indian flat breads such as roti, parathas, dosas etc.

INGREDIENTS USED TO MAKE RADISH STIR FRY

Ingredients used to make radish stir Fry are basic ingredients which are readily available in every Indian kitchen and also in grocery stores and supermarkets. Mustards seeds and cumin seeds for tempering, onion and garlic for stir frying and seasoned with spice powders like turmeric, coriander, chilly, pepper powder, garam masala and lime juice or amchur powder.

HOW TO MAKE RADISH STIR FRY

Start by peeling the radish skin and wash nicely. Slice them thinly in round discs. Thinly slice onion and chop garlic as well. Next temper mustard seeds and cumin seeds in oil. Then add the spice powder followed by radish and stir fry in high heat for 10 minutes. Conclude by adding garam masala powder and lime juice, give a quick stir and your radish stir fry is ready.

Radish is one the healthiest vegetables so one should include this in our regular diet though many does not savoured this healthy vegetable. Radishes are root vegetables that are exceptionally low in calories and rich in nutrients. It is considered as a powerhouse of nutrients. It acts as a powerful detoxifer. It is good for liver and stomach.

Radishes are rich in ascorbic acid, folic acid, and potassium. They are a good source of vitamin B6, riboflavin, magnesium, copper, and calcium. It is for this reason, radish is known to lower cancer risk, regulate blood pressure and good for asthma and diabetic patients.

CAN THE RADISH GEEENS BE CONSUMED?

You can eat both the roots and greens. Radish greens have more fiber, vitamins, and nutrients than the radish itself. Few vegetable vendors they just trim off the greens and sell only the roots. So next time buy radish with greens or ask your vegetable vendor not to trash away the greens. I love the radish greens and use them in many recipes. The greens are so tasty and gives a lovely crunch. This recipe is prepared only with the radish as I have used the greens for other preparation. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT WAYS TO COOK RADISH

Radish can be cooked in several ways. Like in South Indian sambar, dal, paratha, salads, soups, stews, stir fry, sabji, veg and non-veg curries etc. In south it is widely used in sambar and poriyal. Mooli paratha is also very common from the North. Apart from these, there are several ways of making stir fry or sabji each varying from one another according to the region. Not only vegetarian dish but radish pairs well with non-veg also. I love chicken curry cooked with radish and also stir fried pork with radish, the list goes on and on!

TIPS AND TRICKS TO COOK PERFECT RADISH STIR FRY

☆ To avoid the pungent flavor of radish add salt to the sliced radish, mix well and keep aside for few minutes. Just before cooking, squeeze off the juice and cook them. I dont prefer to do this since I dont have problem with the smell and taste of radish. But people who cant take the pungency, this way it reduces the pungent smell.

☆ While buying radish always choose young radish since they are tender and sometimes matured ones lends a slight bitter taste.

☆ You can add curry leaves and chopped green chillies. They will also add a nice flavor.

☆ You can also use sambar powder to spice up the dish.

Cooking time: 15 minutes
Serves: 3

Indredients to make radish stir fry:

3 radish large cut into thin discs
1-2 tbsp oil
¼ tsp mustard seeds
1 onion thinly sliced
4 garlic cloves chopped
1 tsp chilly powder
½ tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp coriander powder
½ tsp pepper powder
½ tsp garam masala powder
1 tsp lime juice or ¼ tsp Amchur powder / dry mango powder
Salt to taste

Step by step picture instructions to make radish stir fry:

Heat the oil in a pan. Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds, let it crackle.

Add in onion and garlic, saute for a minute or until onions starts to turn soft.

Add in turmeric powder, chilly powder, coriander powder, pepper powder and saute for a minute.

Add in the sliced radish, stir well and coat the radish well with the masalas. Stir fry for about 10 minutes on high heat stirring it frequently. The radish will be almost cooked by that time.

Add in garam masala powder and lime juice or amchur powder whichever you are using, give a quick stir and take off the heat.

Your delicious and flavorful radish stir fry is ready to be served.
