A quick and easy blueberry sauce with a hint of lemon is the perfect topping for.your desserts, pancakes, waffles, ice cream and more. All you need are a few ingredients and less than 15 minutes to make this delicious blueberry sauce.

This easy blueberry sauce is made with fresh blueberries, sugar, lemon juice, and water. This easy 4 ingredient blueberry sauce is sweet, saucy, and bursting with beautiful berry flavor. It’s a perfect topping for pancakes, cakes, waffles, yogurt, ice cream and more.
This sauce is gorgeous on it’s own. They are easy to make, and stores well for couple of weeks in the fridge.
The best part about a good blueberry sauce or compote besides the incredible flavour and colour, is that it can be made any time of year with either fresh or frozen berries. Even it works out well with dried blueberries but the process and preparation time will differ.
Blueberries are good antioxidants. You can enjoy them fresh at it is or baked them into cakes, muffins, cupcakes, scones, bread, and pies. But they are even more delicious when cooked up into this easy blueberry sauce or blueberry compote.
It is not only easy to whip it all together, but you can control the thickness of your sauce. You can make it thicker and chunkier or make it a thinner blueberry sauce without the blueberry chunks that you can pour over, pancakes, french toast etc instead of maple syrup.

INGREDIENTS TO MAKE BLUEBERRY SAUCE (COMPOTE)

Fresh Blueberries – Fresh blueberries are used here, but frozen berries will work just as well.
Lemon juice – Freshly squeezed lemon juice is used. It also add a bright flavor as well as a boost of natural pectin to help thicken the blueberry sauce.
Sugar – Sugar is used to slightly sweeten the sauce and balance the tartness from the lemon. You can add the sugar as per the sweetness of your blueberries, especially if the blueberries are off-season and not very sweet.
Water – Very less water is used to cook the blueberries.

BLUEBERRY SAUCE RECIPE VIDEO TUTORIAL
STEP BY STEP PICTORIAL INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE BLUEBERRY SAUCE
Wash the blueberries thoroughly in water and pat dry the blueberries with clean kitchen towel.
Add in the blueberries, sugar, water and lemon juice in a sauce pan. Stir and mix well.

Let the mixture come to a low boil over medium heat.
Cook over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes until the blueberries are wilted and slightly turns soft.
Now with the back of the spatula or spoon gently press the blueberries to mash it.
Put on the lid and cook further, stirring occasionally until it thickens with a pouring consistency. It will take approximately 5-10 minutes.
Turn off the flame. (Please note that as the sauce cools down, it will thicken its consistency so do not over cook them).
Allow the sauce to cool down and then transfer onto a sterilized jar. Store in a refrigerator and use a clean spoon on every serving.

NOTES:
● A pinch of salt can he added to enhance the flavor of the sauce/compote.
● You can add 1-2 teaspoon cornstarch to thicken the sauce. Make a slurry by adding little water and add when the sauce is almost done.
● Increase or decrease the sugar quantity as per the sweetness of your blueberry.
● You can try this with dried blueberries. Soak them for sometime, blend them and make the sauce following this recipe.
● You can also add some lemon zest for the extra punch of flavor.

Yes, you can absolutely use strawberries, blackberries, cranberries, raspberries, cherries stc whatever you like!
HOW TO THICKEN THE SAUCE USING FLOUR OR CORNFLOUR ( CORNSTARCH)?
Usually to thicken sauce, cornflour (cornstarch) is used. You can make a slurry of cornflour. Mix 1-2 tablespoons with an equal amount of water and once dissolved stir it into the sauce, simmer until it thickens.
HOW TO THICKEN BLUEBERRY SAUCE WITHOUT USING FLOUR?
The natural pectin from the blueberries and lemon helps things gel together. The sauce or compote is also thickened from reducing the liquid during cooking. You can control the thickness of the sauce or compote during the cooking process.
WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF THIS BLUEBERRY SAUCE?
This blueberry sauce will last for upto to 3-4 weeks in refrigerator. You can store your homemade blueberry sauce or compote in a sterilized jar preferably glass jar in the refrigerator. Use a clean spoon everytime you serve them.
CAN I FREEZE THIS BLUEBERRY SAUCE?
Sure you can if you have leftovers or you make a large batch and want to preserve it longer, you can freeze it. Divide the sauce into smaller portions using ice cube trays and freeze them. Then you can unmould it and place them in ziplock bags. This way you only need to defrost as much as you’re going to use.
CAN I USE THIS RECIPE FOR CANNING?
