Sweet Potato Katori Chaat / Baked Katori Chaat / Aloo Tokri Chaat

Sweet Potato Katori Chaat with step by step pictures. Katori refers to a bowl or basket and chaat refers to Indian savoury snacks or dish. Sweet potato katori chaat is a powerhouse of flavors in which you get many flavors, textures and tastes. Katori chaat is quite a crowd pleaser. Everyone loves them irrespective of age bar, even kids love the fun to eat this with a little customization at the spice level and it’s a super hit.

Sweet potato katori chaat is a very interesting and delicious recipe. A healthier way of having chaat with the goodness of sweet potato. This is an easy-to-make chaat recipe that has a healthy twist to it and you can certainly enjoy it without any guilt.

The katoris are made with mashed sweet potato and flour and baked to perfection and topped with sweet potato chaat. A perfect dish when you want to have something khata meetha. Something savory that is full of flavor, delicious and tasty!

You can make the katori in two ways – fried version and baked version. Here I have the healthier version which is the baked version.

You will come across a variety of chaat in India according the place of origin. These katoris can be filled with different variety of chaats such as aloo chaat, aloo tikki, chana chaat, papri chaat, bhelpuri, samosa chaat, aloo bonda, dahi bhalla chaat etc along with different types of chutneys and dahi (curd/yogurt). There are numerous possibilities when it comes to fillings. We can experiment with different filling of our likings.

Nevertheless you make your own version of chaat. You can fill the katori with quintessential chaat ingredients like boiled chana (chickpeas), potatoes, papri, papad etc and topped with sev, spicy and sweet chutneys, curd, pomegranate arils, chaat masala etc.

Notes :

✔ Adding of chilly flakes, ajwain and kalonji in katori is optional. You can just keep it plain.

✔ The dough should not be very soft nor stiff.

✔ Preheating the oven is mandatory before baking the katoris.

✔ You can bake the katori ahead of time or even ahead of few days and store in airtight container. They remain crisp and fresh.

✔ Do not roll the pooris thick or they will not be crispy.

✔ Let the katoris cool down completely before filling it.

✔ You can play with the fillings as per your taste and preferences.

Preparation time : 20 minutes
Cooking time : 20 minutes
Serves : 6

Ingredients :

For katori:

½ cup All Purpose Flour/ Whole Wheat flour
½ cup mashed sweet Potato
¼ tsp Baking powder
1 tbsp Oil
¼ tsp Chilly flakes
A pinch of Ajwain seeds
A pinch of Kalonji
30 ml Milk

For Chaat:

1½ cup chopped sweet Potato boiled
1 Onion chopped
1 green Chilly chopped
1 Tomato chopped
½ tsp Chilly powder
1 tbsp chaat Masala
3 tbsps Pomegranate arils
1 large Masala papad fried
3-4 tbsps chopped Coriander leaves
1 tbsp Lemon juice
Salt to taste
Few tbsps Curd to serve with chaat

Instructions for making the dough for Katori :

In a mixing bowl add all the ingredients mentioned in the list except milk and mix well.

Add the milk, mix and knead to make a smooth and soft dough. Cover and keep aside for 10-15 mins.

Divide the dough into 8-9 medium balls.

Flatten the balls slightly and roll them into thin poori and prick them all over with fork.

Grease the back of muffin cups with oil.

Take the rolled pooris and wrap the outer muffin cup and shape it.

Preheat oven @180° C for 10 mins. Put the wrapped muffin cups in a baking tray and bake for 15-20 mins or till golden.

After 5 mins remove the baked katori from oven.

Unmould it and let it cool down completely.

Making the chaat and assembling the katoris :

Add all the chaat ingredients in a mixing bowl except fried papad and mix well.

Just before serving crushed the fried papad and mix well.

Scoop the chaat in the baked katori, garnish with curd and chaat masala and serve.
